Is Using AI in Creative Writing Really Cheating?

Using AI in writing can ruin your career. Or at least, that's what many people believe.

In recent time there have been a lot of debate about the use of AI in creative writing. Generally Indie Authors view any use of AI as cheating, and condemn anyone using it.

Many are convinced that even the suspicion of using AI can ruin your reputation as a writer.

At the same time, the same people claim that AI can never write as well as a human, making it stupid to even consider using it in your writing.

That is why I feel the need to ask people to think about it a bit more.

You obviously shouldn't use AI to write your book for you, but is it wrong to use it to brainstorm your ideas, help you when you are stuck, fact check, or help with research?

Is it wrong to use AI to help you structure your writing, develop your characters, outline your chapters, or come up with names?

Where is the line that we must not cross?

Completely dismissing AI is impossible given that our entire world uses AI to some extent. Even something like spellcheck, grammer control, and autocorrect (although annoying at times) are AI.

It seems like Indie Authors think that they need to uphold a much higher standard than traditionally published authors, and the publishers backing them. But why?

Why should we not use the tools available to us, and make the process easier instead of harder?

Being an independent author is hard enough already.

So why make it harder than it needs to be?
